How Options Selling With Christian Makes Well Over 6-Figures From Trading Stock Options

At the young age of 26, Christian is truly an accomplished options trader and investor. He’s also one of the most bullish I’ve met on Tesla, with around 90% of his portfolio in the stock.

Christian is not your typical properly diversified, mutual funded, passive investor with the maxed out IRAs and company-matched 401K and a year’s worth of living expenses tucked away in CDs paying 5% a year.

He’s aggressive, but understands risk. He has conviction, but knows when to pivot and adopt different option trading strategies.

I hope you enjoy this Q&A.

Let’s begin.

🚀 GETTING STARTED

1. Who are you? Where are you from?

My name is Christian, I’m a 26 year old full time options seller from San Diego, California but currently living in Sarasota, Florida.

2. How did you first become interested in options trading, and what motivated you to start?

I’ll never forget the day I learned about options selling. It was from a mutual friend when we got talking about stocks one day. I was telling him about my $TSLA shares and he was asking me if I ever sell covered calls on them.

I was so confused because I had no idea you could do that.

It actually took me a few days of researching and scratching my head on the idea because it sounded too good to be true.

3. Can you share your early experiences and any challenges you faced when you were starting out as an options trader?

I’m extremely glad that I did not go “all in” when I first started selling options because I made plenty of mistakes that would have cost me a ton of money.

One of the many challenges I faced was being able to calculate risks appropriately.

When I learned options selling we were in a full blown bull market, so selling puts worked amazing for the first few years.

Another challenge I face is not dumping all of my buying power into one play as soon as I see an opportunity.

📊 PREFERRED STRATEGIES

4. What are your preferred options trading strategies, and why do you find them effective?

I have almost my whole account in $TSLA and a few other stocks that I am long on, with a little bit of cash as padding.

I use the stock and cash paired with portfolio margin as collateral to sell cash secured puts (CSP’s) and covered calls on a handful of stocks that I like.

Here’s a list of companies Christian shared recently that he likes for option writing.

5. What’s a lesser-known tip or hack in options selling that has made a significant difference?

My best advice is to stay away from junk companies. It’s not really a hack but it’s a tip that most people have trouble following.

I have a list of those junk stocks here

Trading junk companies always ends the same way, you can squeeze good premium out of them for weeks straight and then out of nowhere they get a massive drop which wipes all your gains PLUS leaves you holding a huge bag of shares that you either need to decide to hold to 0 or cut the loss.

6. Do you trade earnings, if so what strategies do you use?

I do but only on companies that I wouldn’t mind owning.

I try not to chase every earnings I see.

🏦 MONEY MANAGEMENT

7. What position size do you try to maintain for each option trade?

It really depends, I have trouble not dumping all my buying power when I see a good opportunity lol.

8. How do you manage diversification within your portfolio?

While many other options sellers have a well diversified spread of stocks they wheel and buy, I find that it’s best to stay in your lane with what you know best.

I definitely don’t have the most diversified portfolio. In fact, at the moment I am almost 90% in $TSLA, 5% others, and 5% cash.

The reason for that is because my conviction is so high on $TSLA that I can’t justify my money being in many other stocks.

🛡️ RISK MANAGEMENT

9. How do you approach risk management in your options trading? What steps do you take to protect your investments?

The biggest thing I can possibly say here is stay out of margin, I don’t care how high your conviction is.

Margin should only be used if you absolutely know what you’re doing and even then it can lead to huge losses.

Another thing here would be to not sell naked calls.

10. Are there some companies that you would avoid trading options on completely?

Here is Christian’s list of companies to avoid

stocks to avoid when selling cash secured puts and covered calls

11.Have you ever had a trade go against you in a big way, did you manage to repair it, what learnings did you take from it?

Yes plenty of times. You will never have a 100% win rate in options selling.

My biggest loss was selling naked calls on $NVDA earnings Q1 2023 when they shot up 30-40% in that one day. I lost $50k on that trade.

If I ever sell calls now I usually buy a vertical call along with it to protect myself.

In May 2023, you can see the loss Christian made on his NVIDIA trade.

💰 EXPECTED RETURNS

12. What kind of returns do you typically aim for with your options trading?

0.5% to 1% weekly.

weekly vs monthly options

📈 FUNDAMENTAL / TECHNICAL ANALYSIS

13. How important is fundamental and technical analysis in your decision-making process?

I like using a combo of both to make my decisions when selling options.

14. If you use technical analysis, which indicators do you find the most beneficial?

For technical analysis I follow a few different people that I use to validate my theses.

💡 ADVICE FOR BEGINNERS

15. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out in options trading? Are there any common pitfalls they should avoid?

Avoid junk companies (See my list above)

Stay out of margin.

Start small.

If you have a stock that you want to own forever, be extremely careful with your covered call strike prices.

With a small account I always tell people to focus on growing their income so they can grow their account before trying to focus all their efforts on options selling.

You really do need a sizeable account to make options selling a full time gig.

16. Are there any specific strategies or concepts that you recommend new traders focus on mastering first?

They need to be able to:

  • Identify the right stocks to pick
  • Avoid emotional trading
 🔥 Quick fire Qs 🔥

How long have you been trading options for? 5 years

What is your favourite option selling strategy? Selling puts

What is your total account size dedicated for option trading? About $1m or half, I don’t use my whole account because most of my account is in $TSLA shares for the long and I don’t want to lose those.

What % return do you normally aim for each month? At the moment 2-4%

How many stocks do you normally trade at any given time? 3-5

Do you prefer weekly or monthly options? 75% weekly, 25% monthly

What delta range do you normally trade? 10 - 40 delta depending on the trade

What is your favourite online resource or tool for options trading? X.com

Final note: Are there any other things you would like to add that might help aspiring new options traders?

You can find me on Twitter @Optionscjp

I have a discord where I alert all my trades in real time, I don’t like to promote it that much because I don’t want to be “one of those guys” but people were asking me to let them know in real time when I make trades so I created one. There is also a free section of the discord where you can come join the options selling chat 24/7 with myself and many people from Twitter.
